    Kevin Mandia

    Kevin Mandia is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mandiant. In 2004, Kevin founded Mandiant to focus on helping organizations detect, respond to, and contain computer intrusions – making Mandiant the first company with incident response as its core competence.  He has spent over 20 years in information security, and has been on the front lines helping organizations respond to computer security breaches for nearly 15 years.

    Kevin Mandia is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of Mandiant.     Kevin began his career in the United States Air Force. He served as a computer security officer in the 7th Communications Group at the Pentagon, and later as a Special Agent in the Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI), where he worked as a Cybercrime Investigator.

    In the private sector, Kevin served as a Director in the security consulting divisions of Sytex (Lockheed Martin) and Foundstone (McAfee). In these roles he helped organizations address information security challenges including incident response, computer forensics, law enforcement support, counterintelligence and litigation support.

    Kevin has co-authored two books on responding to security breaches, Incident Response: Performing Computer Forensics (McGraw-Hill, 2003) and Incident Response: Investigating Computer Crime (McGraw-Hill, 2001). He provides regular commentary and analysis on cybersecurity issues for national print and broadcast media, including NBC News, CBS, NPR, Fox News, CNN the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal.  He has testified as an expert in federal court and has also provided testimony in hearings before the House Intelligence Committee. 

    Kevin has served as Adjunct Faculty at George Washington University and Carnegie Mellon University, where he taught advanced graduate classes on cybersecurity. He has also developed specialized cybersecurity curricula for organizations including the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the United States Attorney’s Office, the United States Secret Service, the United States Air Force and other U.S. government agencies.

    Kevin holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Lafayette College and a Master of Science in Forensic Science from The George Washington University. He completed the Harvard Business School’s Owner/President Management Program in February, 2013. In 2011, he was named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year for the Greater Washington area.

    Travis Reese serves as the President and Chief Operating Officer at Mandiant, where he leads strategic growth and manages day-to-day operations across the company.  As an industry veteran with a proven track record driving revenue growth and market leadership, he brings over 18 years of experience in executive and program management, computer forensics, information security, information warfare, criminal & fraud investigations, counterintelligence, antiterrorism, and law enforcement as both a Federal Agent and executive within a large government defense contractor.

    Travis brings extensive experience and proven success in creating and managing security organizations, specifically in providing elite technical solutions focused on mission-critical national security programs for the Intelligence Community, as well as the Departments of Defense, State, Homeland Security, and Justice.

    Prior to joining Mandiant, Travis served as Co-Founder and Vice President of the Computer Forensics & Intrusion Analysis Group at ManTech International Corporation, where he built one of the fastest growing and highly-regarded business units in the classified government contractor sector.  Specifically, Travis led sales and operations for four multi-million dollar business units comprising technical experts who delivered advanced forensics, intrusion, cyber defense, and specialized network architecture solutions tailored to the National Security and Intelligence communities.

    Travis is a former Special Agent with the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations.  During his 10 year military career he managed and conducted countless specialized criminal, counterintelligence, antiterrorism, economic crime, and computer forensic investigations. He performed incident response and forensic analysis of seized computer evidence related to central systems fraud, narcotics, counterintelligence, and criminal investigations. He has extensive operational field experience and has testified as an expert witness in both military and civilian proceedings.

    Travis has attended executive education through Harvard Business School and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Wayland Baptist University.  Travis is also a certified Program Management Professional with the Program Management Institute and holds an active government security clearance.

    Richard Bejtlich is Mandiant’s Chief Security Officer. He has more than 15 years of experience in enterprise level intrusion detection and incident response working with the federal government, defense industrial base and Fortune 100 companies.

    Prior to joining Mandiant, Richard was the Director of Incident Response for General Electric, where he built and led the 40-member GE Computer Incident Response Team (GE-CIRT). Before his work at GE, he operated TaoSecurity LLC as an independent consultant, protected national security interests for ManTech Corporation’s Computer Forensics and Intrusion Analysis division, investigated intrusions as part of Foundstone’s incident response team and monitored client networks for Ball Corporation. He began his digital security career as a military intelligence officer at the Air Force Computer Emergency Response Team (AFCERT), Air Force Information Warfare Center (AFIWC) and Air Intelligence Agency (AIA).

    Richard is a graduate of Harvard University and the United States Air Force Academy. He wrote The Tao of Network Security Monitoring, Extrusion Detection, and co-authored Real Digital Forensics. He currently writes for his blog (taosecurity.blogspot.com) and teaches for Black Hat.

    Steve Surdu is the Vice President of Professional Services at Mandiant. As the leader of the Professional Services team, Steve’s primary responsibility is to direct the activities of the consulting and education teams, ensuring that Mandiant provides unsurpassed service to its clients. Steve brings to the table more than 25 years of experience in professional services, solutions delivery and business development. He has worked with clients in the financial services, high technology, healthcare, manufacturing, state and federal government, and retail industries.

    Prior to joining Mandiant, Steve was Vice President of Solution Services at SYSCOM, Inc., where he managed the professional services division, providing oversight of all client service delivery and directly managing selected client engagements.

    Steve also served as Director of Consulting in the Washington, D.C. office of Foundstone, now a division of McAfee. At Foundstone, Steve managed numerous incident response and security assessment engagements across the North American market. In the product arena, Steve planned and oversaw the largest implementation of Foundstone Enterprise, involving the deployment of 85 appliances across 30 departments in a five month period.

    He has led or participated in consulting engagements that developed large-scale custom and packaged software applications, architected complex hosting environments and managed Internet infrastructure that supported thousands of international users.

    Steve earned a Bachelors degree in Business Administration from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

    Dave Merkel is Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Products at Mandiant. Based in Alexandria, Va., Dave focuses on shaping the strategy and direction of our technology and engineering solutions by building scalable innovation to address the rapidly evolving information security market.

    Dave has worked in the Information Security industry and within the world of Incident Response for more than 15 years, including service as a federal agent in the United States Air Force, and more than seven years directing security operations at America Online (AOL).

    At AOL, Dave led a team of technologists to protect corporate systems and network infrastructure. His department was responsible for the design, implementation, and operation of technical security defenses throughout the organization. He established AOL’s first incident response team and led the formation of a company wide program for managing security incidents across Time Warner’s diverse business units. Dave also played a key role in establishing AOL’s security assurance program, providing technical risk assessment services for systems, networks, internal applications, and products.

    As a primary security stakeholder, he authored significant portions of both the AOL and Time Warner information security policy, established an information security management framework for the corporation, and played an instrumental role in ensuring Sarbanes-Oxley and Payment Card Industry compliance.

    Dave also managed AOL’s internal security infrastructure software development initiatives. His team provided innovative solutions for protecting data centers and transit networks at scale, including technologies for intrusion and anomaly detection, incident response management, automated countermeasures deployment, and authentication and authorization.

    Prior to AOL, Dave served as a Special Agent with the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations, where he focused on computer crime and digital forensics. Specifically, Dave conducted criminal and counterintelligence investigations ranging from the trafficking of digital contraband to the pursuit of international felons responsible for attacks against Department of Defense networks. Dave has participated in countless forensic examinations and is a qualified expert witness in federal and state proceedings.

    Dave earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from the University of Colorado at Boulder and has held security clearances at Top Secret and higher.

Yanek’s focus is to ensure our customers have the world’s most effective threat detection and response capability available commercially through a combination of Mandiant technology and expertise.

    Prior to joining Mandiant, Yanek led AOL’s globally distributed Security Engineering teams providing security platforms and services to the Time Warner family of companies. In this role, he was responsible for rapidly increasing operational efficiency of the IT Security organization amidst an increase in organizational change and decline in available resources. He continuously improved security service levels facilitating organization-wide adherence to internal and external security standards and policies.

    Yanek was instrumental managing operational costs by establishing AOL’s Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) as the standard across AOL & Time Warner. He streamlined identity & access management while supporting business flexibility, SOX, and PCI compliance needs. Additionally, his team established an e-Discovery management solution tailored to the needs of the AOL environment, surpassing capabilities offered by external vendors.

    Prior to AOL, Yanek served in IT operations roles focusing on security architecture design and implementation, performance monitoring, and systems infrastructure management at Bell Atlantic and Cigital.

    Yanek holds a Bachelors of Science in Computer Science from the College of William and Mary, a Masters of Science in the Management of Information Technology (MSMIT) degree from the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia, and was the principal author for Mastering FreeBSD and OpenBSD Security (O’Reilly, 2005).

    Prior to joining Mandiant, Grady was a partner at Ernst & Young, leading the firm’s information security program management practice. In this role, he worked with CISOs, CIOs, and directors to help improve organizations’ information security programs. His focus there was on strategic information security planning, organization design, incident response, and targeted threats.

    Before E&Y, Grady was the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at General Electric, overseeing a broad global information security organization. GE’s information security function grew substantially under his leadership, including the development of the company’s first incident response team, a software security center of excellence, and a global operations function responsible for the centralized management of many security technologies. His previous roles at GE include divisional CTO and a variety of positions in application security, web development, and infrastructure management.

    Grady holds a master of business administration degree from Columbia University and a bachelor of science in computer systems and political science degree from Grove City College in Pennsylvania.

    Greg has over 25 years of experience in sales and product management. He has a proven record of success in building and leading global sales organizations, successfully launching new branded products and defining go-to market strategies. His leadership and market strategies result in increased market share, revenue and profitability in both products and services. Establishing new teams and transforming existing ones, he has hired and deployed sales and services teams globally.

    Before joining Mandiant, Greg was with Symantec. He was responsible for leading Worldwide Sales and Marketing at Norton Data Services. He delivered double digit sales growth while defining the cloud services strategy with over 14 million users and 75 petabytes of data.

    Prior to Symantec, Greg was Senior Vice President of Sales, Marketing and Professional Services at Stratus Technologies. He was responsible for providing fault tolerant hardware, software and consulting globally. He focused on solutions to manage and protect the world’s largest banks, payment processors, exchanges, telecommunications companies, distributors, manufacturers and utility systems.

    Greg spent over 20 years with the IBM Corporation in various leadership positions. His most recent role was Vice President of Industry Sales for the Software Group where he established global teams responsible for providing middleware solutions to 14 different industries including the Federal Government. He began his career with TRW Defense and Space Systems in California and worked on programs associated with the first space shuttle mission.

    Greg earned a degree in Business Administration from the University of Southern California and attended the Strategic Executive Program at Harvard Business School.

    Prior to Mandiant, Michael was Vice President of Marketing at Approva Corporation where he established the company as the market leader for continuous controls monitoring solutions. At Approva, Michael rebranded the company’s product portfolio, developed sales enablement and demand generation programs that drove the company’s rapid growth and launched a series of award winning creative campaigns.

    In 2011 BtoB magazine named Michael to their list of “Top 20 Digital Marketers” and SmartCEO magazine has named him as one of the “Top 20 Chief Marketing Officers” in the Washington, DC area.

    Before Approva, Michael was Vice President of Marketing at Aspen Technology (NASD: AZPN), a global provider of process manufacturing optimization software and services. During his tenure, Michael re-branded and re-positioned the company’s portfolio of 200+ products, refined the go-to-market methodology via solution-focused marketing campaigns, implemented a closed-loop lead generation process and improved sales readiness via the creation of value-based selling tools. While at AspenTech, Michael also served in roles as Director, Product Marketing and Director, Strategic Planning.

    Michael’s past roles include experience as a consultant at Gemini Consulting (now Cap Gemini) focused on developing and refining corporate strategies for companies in the software, technology and telecommunications industries. He began his professional career as a consultant and project manager in Moscow, Russia for a computer networking and consulting firm where he helped design and implement a Russia-wide computer network to support the Russian privatization program.

    Prior to joining Mandiant, Mel served as senior vice president and chief financial officer at OPNET Technologies before its acquisition by Riverbed Technology in December 2012.  Prior to OPNET, he served as corporate controller for SteelCloud, Inc., a publicly traded corporation that provides design, development and manufacturing of network appliances and infrastructure server products.  Earlier in his career, he worked as assistant controller for Learning Tree International, Inc., a publicly traded corporation that provides training to IT professionals and managers.

    Mel holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and a Master in Business Administration from George Mason University and is licensed as a certified public accountant in Virginia.

    Jeff Scheel is Mandiant’s Vice President of Business Development. He is responsible for building Mandiant’s relationships with technology alliance partners and global systems integrators while leading Mandiant’s corporate development and acquisition activities. He has more than twenty-five years of experience at enterprise software and security companies in sales, alliances, corporate development and executive leadership roles.

    Prior to joining Mandiant, Jeff served as vice president of business and corporate development for HP’s Enterprise Security Products business unit.  He joined HP through its acquisition of ArcSight where he was senior vice president of business development and built alliance relationships with global systems integrators, ISVs and cloud security providers. Jeff has also held leadership roles at security and enterprise software companies including Damballa, PassMark Security (sold to RSA Security), Vocent Solutions (sold to PassMark Security), Siebel Systems and Oracle.

    Jeff earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History with honors from Stanford University and a Master in Business Administration from Harvard Business School.

    Shane McGee is General Counsel & Vice President of Legal Affairs at Mandiant. He is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP).

    Prior to joining Mandiant, Shane spent eight years at SNR Denton and ended his time there as a partner and co-chair of the Internet and Data Protection Group. Shane counseled clients on a number of issues involving information technology systems and the internet, including incident prevention and response; identifying and mitigating liability for unsecured systems; and regulatory compliance. During his time at SNR Denton, Shane managed the firm’s Investigations, Computer forensics and Electronic discovery (ICE) lab, and utilized that resources to conduct internal and external investigations, and to help his clients respond to discovery requests and subpoenas requesting electronic information. Shane also worked closely with several video game companies creating, implementing, and maintaining programs to protect valuable intellectual property, and litigating against infringers where necessary.

    Shane’s privacy experience includes auditing websites and other information portals for several of the nation’s largest companies; responding to official FTC inquiries regarding companies’ privacy policies and practices; and negotiating settlements with the FTC for alleged privacy and security related violations. His information security experience includes drafting data security policies of all types, responding to security breaches, and advising clients on how and when to notify customers when a security breach occurs. Prior to SNR Denton, Shane practiced at Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells) where he worked closely with technology companies of all sizes.

    Shane received his J.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1998, where he was a student articles editor for the University of Cincinnati Law Review. He was admitted to the Bars in North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
