Shane started his career at Hogan & Hartson (now Hogan Lovells) in the late 90s representing internet startups in Northern Virginia.  He frequently worked onsite with clients to assist with a broad range of legal needs, and spent a large part of his second year working as the only in-house attorney with an internet-based consumer genomics company. With his background in and passion for technology, Shane was able to bridge the communications gap that frequently exists between the founders of technology companies and outside legal counsel.

As his career progressed and the dot.com bubble burst, Shane began representing larger technology companies with respect to all types of privacy, intellectual property and corporate issues.  He represented several clients in privacy-related FTC inquiries, counseled clients on transactions involving billions of dollars in technology assets, and joined litigation teams on cases involving technology rights and advanced electronic discovery issues.

In 2003, Shane joined a newly-formed practice at Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal (later SNR Denton and after his departure, Dentons) to focus in part on the emerging field of data security law.  There, Shane represented some of the largest internet, video game and other technology companies in transactions, regulatory inquiries and court battles, helping to win several multi-million dollar judgments for companies like Yahoo! and Activision/Blizzard.  Shane was introduced to Kevin Mandia in 2004, and acted as outside counsel to Mandiant and its predecessor from 2004 to 2011 when he joined Mandiant as General Counsel.  Shane ended his time at SNR Denton as a partner and chair of the firm’s U.S.-based Internet and Data Protection Group.

Shane enjoys technology almost as much as he does the law, having worked as a programmer, consultant and instructor prior to and during his college years.  Shane is a Certified Information System Security Professional (CISSP).
