In the world of comics and related fiction, superheroes come in all forms, shapes and sizes, and from different backgrounds and universes.

DC Comics introduced the first superhero as we know them today, Superman, in Action Comics #1 in 1938. The following year DC Comics introduced us to Batman in Detective Comics #27.

With the enormous success of these debuts, creating another male superhero would have been a no-brainer for DC Comics. Instead, they gave us Wonder Woman in All-Star Comics #8 in 1941. Wonder Woman arrived on the scene armed with intelligence, strength and her Lasso of Truth, helping to dismiss the notion that women should be relegated to secondary roles.

Wonder Woman paved the way for females in the superhero world. The Amazonian became such an icon that she—along with Superman and Batman—was a founding member of the Justice League team when it first appeared in The Brave and the Bold #28 in 1960.

A Justice League of Cyber Security

Just as Wonder Woman has led the charge for women in comics, FireEye has been helping lead the way for women in cyber security because—as we’ve seen with the Justice League—the culmination of diverse superpowers is what makes them truly unstoppable.

We are proud that women everywhere across the world have played such a critical role in shaping cyber security. Through our FireEye Elevate industry initiative formally launched this past fall at FireEye Cyber Defense Summit 2019, we are standing behind and with all the amazing women in cyber security, encouraging and empowering them to take their involvement to the next level.

Together we are just like Wonder Woman: strong, fierce, smart and powerful.

The goal of this initiative is to "elevate" women in cyber to the c-suite and boardroom by preparing them for the responsibilities and challenges being faced by today’s executives. We have developed a number of programs to accomplish this objective.

For one, FireEye works closely with board members and the c-suite on cyber security training. This elite group of women and men are helping to grow and educate the next generation of cyber security leaders—and we want to help them share their skills, success and know-how with the world.

Additionally, we have partnered with many women’s leadership organizations such as How Women Lead and WITI to bring cyber security board training and risk effectiveness knowledge to their efforts. In September 2019, FireEye was featured by How Women Lead in a cyber update for executives.

We feel the intersection of security technology and opportunities for women is inevitable—and we are not alone in that belief. Melinda Gates, a superhero in her own right, has said: “As technology’s role in society grows, so does the urgency of diversifying the tech sector.”

As we mark International Women’s Day 2020, we’ll be highlighting some of the stories of our women leaders on our social channels, sharing how they embody this evolution and the difference they make each and every day.
